Identity Verification Required for Directors and PSCs

If you’ve received an email from Companies House asking you to verify your identity, please take action as soon as possible. This is part of a new legal requirement under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, which comes into effect on 18 November 2025.

From that date, all company directors and people with significant control (PSCs) must verify their identity with Companies House. This change is designed to reduce fraud and improve transparency across UK companies.

What You Need to Do

To stay compliant and avoid delays or penalties, please follow these steps:

  1. Prepare your ID
You’ll need valid photo identification—either a passport or driving licence.

  2. Verify your identity online
Use the Verify your identity for Companies House service. You’ll need to sign in using a GOV.UK One Login.

    • If you’re creating a GOV.UK One Login for the first time, use a personal email address that isn’t shared or already used by someone else.

    • When prompted for your address, use your home address.

  3. Get your personal code
Once verified, you’ll receive a personal code. This code must be included in your company’s next confirmation statement filed after 18 November 2025.

  4. Check your confirmation statement due date
You won’t be able to file your confirmation statement without the personal code for each director. Make sure all directors are aware and complete the process in time.

  5. Review your personal information
Ensure your Companies House records (e.g., date of birth) match the details on your ID. If they don’t, update them now via WebFiling.

What This Means for You and How I Can Help

As your accountant, I’ve previously filed confirmation statements on your behalf. I can continue to do so after 18 November 2025, but only if:

  • All directors and PSCs have verified their identity, and

  • I receive each individual's personal code to include in the filing.

If these codes are not provided, I will not be able to file your company’s confirmation statement.

I will be in touch with each director to request their personal code ahead of your company’s next filing date. Please keep your code safe and only share it with someone you trust.

Key Points to Remember

  • You only need to verify your identity once, but you must provide your personal code for each role you hold (e.g., director and PSC).

  • PSCs who are not directors must provide their code within the first 14 days of their birth month.

  • From 13 October 2025, you’ll need to use GOV.UK One Login to access WebFiling.

  • Acting early gives you time to resolve any issues and helps your company stay compliant.

If you have any questions or need help checking your company’s filing dates, feel free to reach out. We’re here to guide you through the process and ensure everything runs smoothly.
